Nature: The Best Designer in the World

In his book “Bird” Andrew Zuckerman uses an impossibly fast shutter speed (1/8000th) to capture only what nature can achieve, a beautiful harmony of colour, texture and function.

The hyper real photographs of nearly 75 different species reveal each bird’s personalities and distinct features.

Leave Your Mark

Attach this specially designed chalk container, the Contrail designed by Studio Geraldi and it will dispense chalk onto your back tire and in return leave a line of where you’ve been. Multiply this and you get beauty in the intertwined woven lines and function in the form of a marked bike path, inadvertently reclaiming a part of the road. An aerial view would make a great info graphic documenting the volume of cyclist and their routes.

VW Wheel Well Bike

VW Wheel Well Bike

Here’s a great example of applying design to simple challenges in life. Ever wanted to park your car and explore further than your feet might want to go? Well here’s a very unique and clever concept, an electric bike that can fold into a circular shape and fit in most cars spare tire compartments. Without pedals, the bike is fully electric with a range of 20km and can reach speeds of up to 20km/h. Could this be a stepping stone to leaving our cars parked, reducing congestion and ultimately a better environment.

A Contribution to the Future

An airplane propelled by solar energy, capable of flying either day or night, able to circle the globe without an ounce of fuel or pollution? It may sound like an impossible task, but Swiss company Solar Impulse have begun testing their first long-range solar airplane. So far so good. We look forward to hearing more news later this year when they start testing night flying that will hopefully lead into a round the world flight scheduled in 2012

Earth Day: Planes or Volcano

Earth Day: Planes or Volcano?

This year is the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, and was celebrated with a bang, courtesy of Iceland’s Eyjafjallajokull volcano.
While Eyjafjallajokull’s been spewing out 150,000 tons of CO2 per day, the 11,000 European and international flights cancelled per day have prevented over 340,000 tons of CO2 from entering the atmosphere, collectively lowering our emissions by 206,000 tons each day. It appears that Eyjafjallajokull’s antics are actually doing the environment a bit of a favor.

Snowing Blossoms

Snowing Blossoms

Bike along 10th avenue here in Vancouver at this time of year and you’ll be treated to the fruits of spring. A magnificent tunnel of cherry blossoms. Literally surrounded by the countless pink flowers, a typical bike ride becomes a ravishing visual and olfactory experience. Not only is it a beautiful sight to see, but they also serve as a protective barrier against the rain – and if it’s windy, it snows pink petals, falling to the ground to create a textured carpet that covers the road.
